Why does the client have option for peer-to-peer transfer?

Before you login, there's options button that allows to set rates and enable/disable peer-to-peer transfer. What kind of data is transferred by this system?

Patches/updates. They can be configured via that system to be downloaded as peer-to-peer material (aka torrents).

Hmm, haven't looked carefully at the patching lately, so I don't know if it's still there,
but Riot's P2P had the disadvantage over torrents of not having an "endgame strategy":
for torrents the last few pieces would be downloaded from multiple sources, wasting some
bandwidth to finish quickly, while with Riot's patch p2p I've had the bad fortune in the past
of getting 1 of the last pieces of the patch from a very slow peer and being stuck at 99%
for 10+ minutes, while data was crawling in at probably 0.5Kbyte sec...
OTOH, if you disable p2p, you probably only get data from the Riot seed, which could
lower your patch download speed significantly...
