Edit: recently named links have become broken so only the web addresses show instead of the supporting text. As a result, some sections may be harder to read or look out of context because of the missing supporting text.

I apologize for this, however there is not much I can do. I am hoping Riot will fix /re-enable this feature as it makes it a lot harder for me to manage this thread without them!

Introduction

  • This thread contains a compilation of the current game problems and questions that are constantly popping up, improving upon the previous "Wrenchmen's Toolbox".

I urge people not post their problems in this thread, asking for support - Please make a new thread specific to your problem; It makes it not only easier for yourself, but for those who'll be assisting you with your problem. It'll also keep this thread much cleaner /easier to manage and I'll be able to spot replies with suggestions or improvements that I can implement into this thread for all to benefit from much easierf

This thread will be in a couple of sections and this first part will have some of the more recent, yet not so important details first; such as questions about "Where is my free RP" as they are currently plaguing the Help&Support forums, pushing the more important posts down.

This thread is also still a Work in Progress, but I want to post now so I can reserve my place holders while its quiet! <3

Last but not least, the majority of the solutions are very simple and most of the "specific" solutions are just a more targeted copy of the "generic trouble shooting" section.

Help&Support + Wrenchmen
  • I do not know how Riot classifies their "Help&Support" forum as, but due to the lack of activity by "Reds" I am therefore declaring it as an unofficial means of support with [URL2="http://support.leagueoflegends.com/anonymous_requests/new"]Riot's ticket support system[/URL2] as being the official means of support.

It's also good to take note that Wrenchmen are not employees of Riot, but fellow gamers who have been given Wrenchmen status for supporting players on a regular basis during their own spare time. It is not their duty to come here and support players, neither is it your right to demand their help, complain or otherwise put blame on them.

This doesn't mean you should be putting hate towards Riot employees either, Please be pleasant and polite to all despite how frustrating your problem may be <3

Due to Riot's low activity here, account related issues (passwords, hacked accounts, RP, IP boosts and so forth) other than what has been stated in this thread would be better queried to Riot's official support team as they are the only ones who can fix account related problems.

Contacting support
  • To send a ticket to support you will need to go to [URL2="http://support.leagueoflegends.com/anonymous_requests/new"]Riot's official support page[/URL2]. Please remember that it may take over a week for a reply so please be patient. You can also post to these forums and try get a faster response by the community, but bare in mind these forums are "unofficial" and account related issues may never get answered here

Hot topics
  1. Free RP
    • Every now and then Riot will give all players RP for free as a gesture of goodwill and as an apology for server downtime /instability.

Due to the high volume of users, updating several million user accounts at the same time (on top of an already busy store activity) would likely cause the servers to crash as well as many other potential problems.

As a result, RP is distributed at a steady pace throughout the course of several days. As of current, RP distribution should have been successfully applied to all players by 1/07/2011

  2. RP not received
    • With the way PVP.net works, often the RP displayed in the top right corner of PVP.net doesn't show the correct RP value.

Riot's solution to this is to go to the store, click on a champion or skin so that the purchase confirmation box appears. The correct RP value should therefore be shown in this box and you can come to your conclusion as to whether or not your RP has been correctly received.

At this stage you can close down the purchase confirmation box by pressing the cross in the top right.

In the case that your RP has not been received you will need to [URL2="http://support.leagueoflegends.com/anonymous_requests/new"]contact support[/URL2] regarding the issue.

  3. IP boosts during downtime
    • Riot has stated that boost are extended for any downtime + some extra. For most people, this should mean they have not lost out or even gained from the downtime and can continue to enjoy their boosts.

How extensions to boosts are handled is still unknown, and it seems very likely that if you had 1 day or less of a boost left it is possible for this extension to not make up for the downtime.

In this case I suggest [URL2="http://support.leagueoflegends.com/anonymous_requests/new"]contacting support[/URL2] regarding the issue and see if they will compensate you. Riot is a friendly and reasonable company and it doesn't hurt to ask!

  4. Removing leaves & Loss forgiven
    • Riot will not and can not remove a leave from your account be it your fault or not. You will not get banned for the odd leave and as far as I'm aware, their system does take into account genuine disconnects to actual rage quits.

The loss of elo in ranked games is also another disappointing factor when faced with a leave due to a bug or problem with the game. However; loss forgiven can not be applied to a single account either.

Lost forgiven is applied to all players only when there has been a significant, global problem experienced by all players affecting actual game play.

In the case of a "Loss Forgiven" being applied, this means you will not lose elo for losing and that you will gain slightly less elo for winning.

  5. Banned because of unstable servers
    • To prevent a potential ban from the leaver buster, try to avoid going into normal and ranked games when the games servers are playing up; and you have already gained a leave because of it.

Going into 5 games in a row and getting 5 leaves in a row as a result is no excuse; even if the fault was Riots end. Test with custom games! You can't get banned for leaving custom games!

Additionally, you shouldn't get banned for "one leave". As such, either you have had multiple leaves that day /in the past or the ban was the results of the [URL2="http://eu.leagueoflegends.com/tribunal"]tribunal[/URL2]

If, despite this you feel the ban was unjustified [URL2="http://support.leagueoflegends.com/anonymous_requests/new"]contact support[/URL2]

  6. Bans still present
    • Although a ban has a date for when it expires, there is no set time as to when, during that day the ban will be lifted. Considering this is Europe and multiple times zones apply it would be best to assume that if the ban isn't removed the day after the date specified, there is a problem.

There is little point in e-mail support "on the day" the ban was specified because it may take a week + to get a reply and you'll only clog the support team with a request that potentially doesn't need solving since you may have only needed to wait just a couple more hours. Wait the extra day and then send your report in.

  7. Tribunal says I'm not level 30
    • Close down the tribunal page and delete your cookies

  8. Account was hacked
    • Only Riot can investigate account related issues such as this since it will require account related information, such as your e-mail address used to sign up, your user name and possibly some other personal details in order to retrieve your account and issue you a password reset.
    • It would be wise to see the section on "wrong username or password" first, just in case.

  9. Shop doesn't have xyz skin
    • Many skins were seasonal (Christmas themed ones sold during the Christmas period) and might be available again during those seasonal periods. Other skins are limited editions; meaning they were only on sale for a few days and they will no longer be sold again or they were skins available only by attending certain events hosted by riot and were never on sale in the first place.

Unfortunately, if a skin is missing from the shop it is due to the above reasons. The only exception to this are new skins, as they are sometimes added to the champion profiles pages before they reach the shops - check the forums for announcement regarding the skins /shop updates

    • Uninstall Pando Media Booster
    • Use the repair function built into the patcher
    • Uninstall and reinstall to a new directory

  2. Solutions to most connectivity problems
    • Ensure you are running as Admin (right click > run as administrator)
    • Ensure league of legends isn't being blocked by any Firewall or Anti-Virus programs by adding them to their designated "white list" (or temporarily disabling them).
    • Ensure your Router isn't blocking league of legends by connecting directly to your modem via an Ethernet cable.
    • Ensure Windows internet security isn't set too high (Control panel > Networking > Internet options > Security tab > "Medium - High" is acceptable)
    • Uninstall Pando Media Booster
    • Use the repair function built into the patcher

Patcher and pre-login problems
  1. Patcher does not start
    • Ensure you are running as Admin (right click > run as administrator)
    • Uninstall Pando Media Booster
    • Ensure you have all the software requirements (See solutions to most problems)
    • Uninstall and reinstall to a new directory
    • Request support in a new thread, copying the contents of "rads_lol_launcher" & "rads_user_kernel" to Pastebin as two individual Pastebins and link back to them.

  2. Patcher does not patch
    • Ensure you are running as Admin (right click > run as administrator)
    • Uninstall Pando Media Booster
    • Install the latest version of [URL2="http://www.microsoft.com/net/"].NET Framework[/URL2]
    • Use the repair function built into the patcher
    • Reinstall the game into a new directory
    • Request support in a new thread, including a copy of your "rads_lol_launcher" & "rads_user_kernel" (see appendix for more information about log files)

  3. Play button is grey
    • This usually implies Riot has disabled their servers (usually to do maintenance) or the servers have crashed and therefore the server status should be "offline" or "busy". You will have to wait until Riot restarts their servers.
    • Follow the "Solutions to most connectivity problems"

  4. Pressed Play but login screen doesn't load
    • Install the latest version of [URL2="http://www.adobe.com/products/air/"]Adobe Air[/URL2]
    • Install the latest version of [URL2="http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/"]Adobe Flash[/URL2]
    • Install the latest version of [URL2="http://www.microsoft.com/net/"].NET Framework[/URL2]
    • Use the repair function built into the patcher
    • Uninstall and reinstall to a new directory

  5. Pressed Play but login screen is black
    • Delete LolClient
    • File is located in: *\League of Legends\RADS\projects\lol_air_client\releases\xyz\deploy
    • "xyz" is a numbered folder that can vary depending on the current version of the game, if there is more than one folder, pick the highest number.
    • Run the repair tool built into the patcher.

Login issues
  1. Wrong username or password
    • Sometimes just a random error! close the client down and restart league of legends.
    • Ensure Capslock isn't on
    • Usernames are case-sensitive, if you wrote your name "lIkE tHiS" during signup, you'll have to type it that way each time.
    • Your in-game name can actually be different to your username, make sure you're typing the right one
    • Did you download the NA client by mistake? See Appendix B to see if you have the NA or EU client and how to switch between the two.

  2. Maestro server error
    • See "Solutions to most connectivity problems" above
    • Uninstall Pando Media Booster
    • Use the repair function built into the patcher
    • Install the latest version of [URL2="http://www.microsoft.com/net/"].NET Framework[/URL2]

  3. Server busy error
    • The servers are most likely having technical issues and is a problem on Riot's end. You'll just have to keep trying /Wait for the issue to be resolved
    • A small number of players are constantly getting server busy errors when they shouldn't - if this error has been present to you for several hours or even days with no announcement on forums about the servers having problems, it is suggested that you follow the solutions to most problems.

General PVP.net issues
  1. Grey Play or Shop button
    • Riot have disabled starting new games or the shop for maintenance, check the forums for an announcement.

  2. Ranked /Normal /5v5 games are missing from the menu
    • Riot have disabled certain game modes that are experiencing problems; they will be back up soon! Check the forums for any announcements.

  3. Can't start a game with friends
    • If the "start game" button is gray or doesn't start the game, it is usually a minor issue that can be fixed by canceling the game, making a new lobby and re-inviting your friends.
    • If in ranked, you can only invite +1 ("duo queue") or +4 ("5 man pre-made"). There is no 3 or 4 man pre-made options.
    • If an error appears saying that the game type can not be started, Riot has disabled some game modes. Close down the game lobby and attempt to make a new one to see which game mode are available to you

  4. Custom game says I don't have enough players
    • During peek times, Riot limits custom games so that there needs to be more human players. This is done to stop there being too many single-man custom games (which still take up a 10-man server slot up)
    • Invite some friends, join someone else's custom game or play ranked /normal instead.

  5. A match was found but champion select didn't appear
    • A bug that often happens once in a blue moon where the pop-up box asking if you would like to go into champion select or continue what you were doing doesn't appear. Waiting 30 seconds for the timer that is normally present to finish, and it should force you to champion select to appear.

If by any chance after 30 seconds you find you are still not in champion select you will have to decide between dodging the game and getting a dodge penalty vs waiting 2 minutes so you get a random champion and reloading PVP,net and reconnecting to the game.

Game does not load

  1. Screen goes black then closes / crashes
    • ATI Catalyst and Nvidia Control panel may set up profiles which overrides program settings. Try disabling them to ensure they are not conflicting with the game. Additionally, you could even enable a profile (if it was already disabled) to see if this fixes the problem.
    • The game's default video settings may be too high, see Appendix B for information on configuring the game.cfg file or download the following template set to the lowest settings.
    • In rare cases, you may need to use an older graphics card driver. Try rolling back to an older version or downloading an older driver installation from your graphic card venders' website.
    • See Solutions to most problems
    • Request support in a new thread, including a copy of your latest "r3d" log file (see Appendix A for more information about log files)

  1. Screen goes black with 'connection to server failed' message
    • Can usually be ignored, wait a little while and click reconnect
    • If the servers are playing up, it may take a couple of attempts at reconnecting before it succeeds. Check the forums for any announcements or if other users are experiencing similar issues (general discussions typically becomes filled with threads regarding any global issue)
    • See solutions to most connectivity problems
    • Request support in a new thread, including a copy of your latest "r3d" log file (see Appendix A for more information about log files)

  1. Client / Server mismatch
    • Usually the result of patching from NA. See Appendix B for details on configuring your client back to EU
    • You will need to go to these two folders:
      *\League of Legends\RADS\solutions\lol_game_client_sln\release s
      *\League of Legends\RADS\projects\lol_game_client\releases
And delete the most recent folder (the one with the highest number)
    • You also want to delete LolClient and LolClient.swf from:
      *\League of Legends\RADS\projects\lol_air_client\releases\xyz
    • "xyz" is a numbered folder that can vary depending on the current version of the game, if there is more than one folder, pick the highest number.
    • Then run the repair tool built into the patcher.

In-game issues
  1. Game loads but background is black or strange colours
    • Close the game down and reconnect, this usually fix most visual bugs
    • The game's default video settings may not be suitable for your PC, edit your video settings and see if this fixes your issue

To edit video setting you need to be in game and click the "cog" icon in the bottom right next to the minimap then select video settings. If the visual errors prevents you from seeing the video settings menu, see Appendix B for information on configuring the game.cfg file or download the following template set to the lowest settings.
    • ATI Catalyst and Nvidia Control panel may set up profiles which overrides program settings. Try disabling them to ensure they are not conflicting with the game. Additionally, you could even enable a profile (if it was already disabled) to see if this fixes the problem.

  1. Low FPS, game unplayable or crashes
    • Laptop users, make sure your power plan isn't set to power saving mode. PC users could also have the wrong power plan set. Set it to high performance.
    • Make sure your monitor is plugged into and using the correct video display port. We'd hate to see you using your on-board graphics all this time instead of your fancy ATI graphics card.
    • If your FPS is usually stable, close the game down and reconnect. There are a couple of bugs that can drop your FPS.
    • The game's default video settings may not be suitable for your PC, edit your video settings to a lower one and see if this fixes your issue

To edit video setting you need to be in game and click the "cog" icon in the bottom right next to the minimap then select video settings. If the FPS issue prevents you from seeing the video settings menu, see Appendix B for information on configuring the game.cfg file or download the following template set to the lowest settings.
    • You may be lacking system resources (Memory / CPU). Try closing as many background programs as possible or use a game booster to do this for you.
    • ATI Catalyst and Nvidia Control panel may set up profiles which overrides program settings. Try disabling them to ensure they are not conflicting with the game. Additionally, you could even enable a profile (if it was already disabled) to see if this fixes the problem.
    • In rare cases, you may need to use an older graphics card driver. Try rolling back to an older version or downloading an older driver installation from your graphic card venders' website.
    • See Solutions to most problems
    • Run a resource monitor in the background. If CPU and memory is constantly at 100% and your computer is around the game's minimum requirements and all of the above have failed, you may need to invest in a more capable computer.
    • If CPU and memory isn't completely used up (70% and below is a good value) you might just need to invest in a better graphics card.
    • Before buying new hardware, don't be scared to ask on the forums; even if your CPU and memory is at 100% you may only need to buy a new graphics card rather than a whole new pc
    • Request support in a new thread, including a copy of your latest "r3d" log file (see Appendix A for more information about log files)
    • Some people have reported disabling their sounds (in game) improving their FPS dramatically. This is most likely a FPS bug that may be fixed in a upcoming patch (reinstalling has solved the problem for some)
    • Some people get a FPS drop from certain animation, typically the frost /slows animation. This is most likely a FPS bug that may be fixed in a upcoming patch (reinstalling has solved the problem for some)

  1. Random crash with bug splat error
    • The error message "your graphics card drivers may be out of date" is a generic error message and can typically be ignored (after updating your dirvers, of course).
    • The game's video settings may not be suitable for your PC, edit your video settings and see if this fixes your issue

To edit video setting you need to be in game and click the "cog" icon in the bottom right next to the minimap then select video settings. If the crash is preventing you from seeing the video settings menu, see Appendix B for information on configuring the game.cfg file or download the following template set to the lowest settings.
    • Request support in a new thread, including a copy of your latest "r3d" log file (see Appendix A for more information about log files)

Appendix A - Log files and locations

Log file basics

  1. How to post log files
    • Please do not copy the contents of a log file in your post on these forums!. The forums do not format the logs very well and they'll often be too large anyway.
    • The preferred method is to upload the files is either via these forums (add an attachment) or, if the file is too large use a third party service such as MegaUpload and link to the file in your post.
    • Currently these forums only allow 19.Kb size text documents and 97.Kb sized zip files.
    • When e-mailing Riot, you can add an attachment to your ticket - be sure to add any logs that may be of use, it'll save them from having to ask you for it and prolonging your issue.

Patcher related logs
  1. rads_lol_launcher
    • This file is located in: */League of Legends/RADS/
    • You want to open the text document version (not the LOGS2 version)
    • This file has information regarding the "launcher" and may have errors that hint to problems associated with the game not starting (and by game, at this stage, we mean the patcher that loads up first)
    • Include the contents of this file with any issues regarding starting the game or the patcher!

  2. rads_user_kernel

PVP.net related logs
  1. Adobe air log files
    • This file is located in: *\League of Legends\RADS\projects\lol_air_client\releases\xyz\deploy\logs
    • "xyz" is a numbered folder that can vary depending on the current version of the game, if there is more than one folder, pick the highest number.
    • The logs file names are a bit obscured, so use the "date modified" section to find the most recent one.
    • This file has information regarding Adobe Air (anything related to PVP.net) and may have errors that hint to problems associated with PVP.net
    • Include the contents of this file with any issues regarding PVP.net, including logging in issues.

Game logs
  1. r3d log files
    • This file is located in: *\League of Legends\RADS\solutions\lol_game_client_sln\release s\xyz\deploy
    • "xyz" is a numbered folder that can vary depending on the current version of the game, if there is more than one folder, pick the highest number.
    • The logs file names are a bit obscured, so use the "date modified" section to find the most recent one.
    • This folder contains both netlogs and r3d logs, make sure it is the r3d log file
    • This file has information regarding the actual game and may have errors that hint to the problems associated with the game.
    • Include the contents of this file with any issues regarding the game (after champion select)

Appendix B - Client configuration files

Client Region related files (NA/EU swapping)
  1. system.cfg
    • This file is used by the patcher to determine if your game is up to date. The patcher doesn't actually care if you play on EU or NA, it only cares about if you want the game patched based on the NA version or the EU version.
    • This is the main cause for Client / Server miss match issues, since NA typically updates a few days ahead of EU
    • The file is located in: *\League of Legends\RADS\system
    • You only want to edit "Region=EU" to say either "NA" or "EU"
    • Note capital letters

  2. launcher.cfg
    • This file is used by the patcher to determine what server you will actually connect to and associated services (chat etc)
    • This file is what you edit in order to change between NA or EU servers.
    • The file is located in: *\League of Legends\RADS\system
    • You only want to edit "airConfigProject=lol_air_client_config_eu" to say either "na" or "eu"
    • note lower case letters

Language configuration files
  1. locale.cfg
    • This file is used by the patcher to determine what language-based files should be downloaded and configured to use.
    • This file is what you edit in order to change your game's language.
    • The file is located in: *\League of Legends\RADS\system
    • The following is a list of available languages:
      1. en_gb
      2. de_de
      3. fr_fr
      4. es_es
      5. zh_cn
      6. en_us

Game configuration files
  1. game.cfg
    • This file is used by the game to store mostly video related settings (model details, resolution etc)
    • The file is located in: *\League of Legends\RADS\solutions\lol_game_client_sln\release s\xyz\deploy\DATA\CFG
    • "xyz" is a numbered folder that can vary depending on the current version of the game, if there is more than one folder, pick the highest number.
    • There will be no game.cfg if you have not changed your settings (accessible only within a game) from their default value.
    • Typically, 0 = "disabled" and 1 = "enabled"
    • Edit or replace this file to solve potential crashes and performance issues.

Beautiful and unified, thank you.

Now if only we got the users to post in the right forums... we're having a plague of whine threads clogging up the help and support. (Which is kind of, well, due to it's namesake, limited to help and support)

Unable to access Tribunal even if level 30

Clearing cookies of leaguelegends.com and the recent browser cache fixes this issue.
Ctrl+F5 on any other browser than Chrome should also work.

Well done Lukus. Now all we need is a Wrench or Red to check everything and make sure it's all golden and then a very handy sticky

You also need Internet Explorer for the game. The launcher uses basic framework (like many other things) from the installed IE. That's for whoever who has uninstalled IE for some bizarre reason...
